Amazon Sets New Record Over Christmas

Amazon achieved a new record by adding more than 3 million new members worldwide to its Amazon Prime program in just one week, amid the height of the holiday shopping season.

It is the latest sign of the growing program, which includes a $99 annual subscription for free shipping service and video streaming.

Although the company does not publicly disclose the actual number of Amazon Prime members, simply saying “tens of millions,” in September an analyst estimated that there were between 60 and 80 million Prime members worldwide, before the holiday season began. Meanwhile, Netflix has 69 million members worldwide.

Amazon succeeds with Prime program

This is the most recent example of a successful holiday for the Seattle company. In its core e-commerce business, Amazon is trying to extend its advantage over traditional online competitors like Target and Walmart, keeping an eye on its new rival, Jet.com.

The company hinted at the strong holiday sales through Prime. “This was another great holiday season to be a Prime member, and we welcomed three million new members in the third week of December alone,” said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in a press release. “Over 200 million more items were shipped for free with Prime this holiday, and members doubled their viewing hours of Prime video compared to last year.”
