MCDONALD’S EXPANDS HOME DELIVERY MOTIVATED BY YOUNG CUSTOMERS

McDonald’s, the world’s largest burger chain, is expanding its partnership with UberEATS and by the end of June will offer delivery meals from 3,500 locations nationwide.

CEO Steve Easterbrook told shareholders at a Bernstein investor conference that “we are encouraged by early results in the U.S. where delivery is resonating well, particularly with our younger customers.”

Almost 60 percent of orders are being placed in the evening hours or after midnight, times of the day when McDonald’s restaurants are typically slowest. This is allowing franchisees, who run most of McDonald’s restaurants, to extend their business at a time when they would typically not be producing many sales.

Customers can place McDonald’s orders on the UberEATS mobile app or on UberEATS.com, using the same account they use to take Uber rides and track their order, as an UberEATS delivery partner brings their meal directly to them.

“Through the ease of the UberEATS app, our customers can enjoy their favourite McDonald’s foods delivered right to them enjoying greater choice, control and personalization than ever before,” Easterbrook said in a news release.

The full menu at participating McDonald’s restaurants will be available for delivery with the exception of soft serve cones. An UberEATS booking fee that it is generally a flat $4.99, applies to each order.

The average delivery now takes about 30 minutes, shorter than many other options on UberEats, Easterbrook said and because 75% of the U.S. population lives within 3 miles of a McDonald’s, Uber drivers don’t have to place the food in any special containers to keep it hot and fresh.

The concept is relatively new in the U.S., but McDonald’s is already one of the largest providers of delivered food in other parts of the world, with over two decades of experience in delivery. According to 2016 data, the burger chain currently has around $1 billion in total delivery sales.

U.S. cities with McDelivery include Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Fresno, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Orlando, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego, Seattle, Tampa and Washington, D.C.
