The new bridge linking the Tijuana International Airport to San Diego has been operational for more than 24 hours and hundreds of people have already used it.

The flow of people was slow at 9 in the morning when the Cross Border Xpress bridge opened, but the expression on people’s faces once getting to the inspection booth was a smile due to the short wait time period to cross the border.

Local newspaper El Sol de Tijuana said that at least 600 travelers used the bridge to get to their flights at the airport or to go to USA.

The CBX turned out to be beneficial for business travelers o those who travel alone. Sandra Rosales, an accountant from Oxnard, California told the San Diego Union-Tribune that she was considering using the new bridge to visit her family in San Luis Potosí. However, she thinks that paying the price for four members of her family to use the bridge is more expensive than crossing the border on foot or in a car.

“The dynamic and image of the border is changing”, said Humberto Inzunza, president of the Economic Development Committee of Tijuana (Consejo de Desarrollo Económico de Tijuana [CDT] in Spanish.) Taxi and business owners are against the project already in motion but Inzunza assures us that the city will benefit from it on the long run.

It won’t be until December 19 when the CBX starts charging a fee for using the bridge, as mentioned on their official website ($18 dollars per person.) Until then, travelers can use the bridge for free.
